Troop 304 Annual Winter Campout at Dalton!

February is the Troop 304's traditional winter campout at Camp Dalton. Ten scouts braved the single digit temperatures and camped in tents on the snow on February 12-13th, 2000.

Cutting down a dead tree for fire woodGathering firewood to stay warm is something that motivates all Scouts! In this photo, the Scouts have found a dead tree to cut down for firewood. Their eyes were a little bigger than their tools and the Scouts found that even cutting down a dead tree is a lot of work!

There was enough snow to build a sizable snow fort! The snow had a crust on top, but was soft below. This prevented us from building the snow caves and igloos that we had planned to test our winter survival skills. However, several Scouts found that the snow was perfect for a snow fort!

Learning to start a fire and boil water with less than 3 matches! An important wilderness survival skill is learning how to start a fire with the fewest matches possible. To help develop this skill, the Patrols of Troop 304 compete in a water boiling contest. Starting out with 3 matches, the Patrols try to be the first to boil over their pan of water.
