The Camp, Hike, and Visit to Otis Air Force Base.

April 17th - 19th, 1999

Getting There!

We left the Church at around 1:00 Saturday afternoon and arrived at Camp Greenough at 3:00. The scouts set up their tents and put up a tarp. We started gathering wood and soon afterwards it started to rain. We were certainly glad that we had that tarp! It finally stopped raining and the we were able to make a fire and cook our food. After clean up it was off to our tents for a good night sleep.

The Hike

At 6:30 Sunday morning,  we were awaken for the hike by the Troop bugler playing Reveille. The hike was 10 miles around the Cape Cod area. We hiked 3 miles and then stopped to eat lunch. We then hiked for over 3.5 miles over the sand dunes and around tidal pools before returning just in front of a rain storm. The scouts were exhausted when we returned to camp! We ate and had a fun campfire. The scoutmaster cooked fresh bread over the campfire. We all gobbled it up! Then it was time for bed again!

Otis Air Force Base

We got up early Monday and started to pack.  Then we got in to our cars and drove to Otis Air Force Base. We arrived at the base and the guard waved us on. We met with the base information officer and he showed us a lot and told us the history of Otis Air Force base. He also told us about how the air National Guard works. We then visited the control tower and the air traffic control area. Although much smaller than a large airport, these people do a similar job.

This campout was fun!
